According to Lluís Martínez Sistach, the Barcelona Cardinal Archbishop, Pope Benedict XVI will make his way through Diputación street to the Sagrada Familia passing Via Laietana, Pau Claris and Marina street the 7th of November. The Pope will be arriving in Barcelona Saturday the 6th of November in the afternoon right after his visit to Santiago de Compostela and will be recieved by an entourage of followers who will transport him from the airport to the Archibishop’s headquarters. On the 7th of November, the Pope will leave from there in the “Popemobile” and take his route until he reaches the famous Sagrada Familia! Then in the Sagrada Familia church, designed by none other than Gaudí himself, the Pope will lead the Eucharist with around 1,100 expected people in attendance, among them some important cardinals archbiships, bishops, abbots and priests. Unfortunately, the Eucharist will not be open to all the public considering only the Archbishop himself had the power to give invites for inside the Sagrada Familia and outside. After the events of the day, the Pope will go directly to the airport where he will be baded farewell by the King and Queen of Spain and other important authorities.
The cost of this little visit to Barcelona is said to be between 500,000 and 600,000 euros not counting the price of security and news coverage. The Archbishop of Barcelona has said that they already have around 300,000 euros that has been donated by the public and also by privately.
Another interesting thing that the Pope will do during his stay here in Barcelona is try the traditional Crema Catalana, the “mona” de Pascua and other traditional Catalan dishes on the 7th of November with 140 members of the Barcelona diocese and other Catalan diocese. Tune in for more information about the Pope’s weekend in Barcelona.
