PLACES YOU MUST SEE IN BARCELONA: The Old Town, El Born (part I)

Author: Saras  |  Category: Barcelona tourist Information

“The old town” in Barcelona consists of four basic areas:
El Born, famous for it’s chic restaurants, bars and it’s church the Santa Maria del Mar.
El Raval, located to the left of the Rambla, famous for it’s bohemian and ethnic peculiarities.
El Barri Gotic, famous for its small and sometimes dark streets full of specialty boutiques, bars and restaurants.
And the Barceloneta, famous for the seafood restaurants, private ships and yachts, it’s famous beach and boardwalk.
The old town is named thus because it marks the original city of Barcelona (Medieval around 1250-1350 C.E.) which in the past was safely tucked behind the emblematic and now long gone Spanish walls.

El Born__________________________________________________________________________
One of my personal favorite places in Barcelona, here you will find that the Born area is fun both in the daytime and at night.

Museo Picasso
Pablo Picasso, although known famously all over the world for his development of cubism, began in classical style of art, believe it or not. Some of the paintings that may be found in his beggining reportoire included stills, portraits, and landscapes. One of the favorite paintings in the Picasso museum is his “Science and Charity” showing a very expert young Picasso’s relationship with realism and more specifically social realism at only the age of 15. The Museo Picasso is great because it takes you on a journey through the artist’s process as he begins as a novice painter and transforms into the icon that he has become today through paintings and drawings that the artist did during his young years in school and through his travels.

Palau de la Música Catalana
Sant Francesc de Paula, 2.
This building constructed by famous Cataláns Lluís Domènech i Montaner in 1905-1908 is a definite stop for anyone in love with architecture or the modernist style. On the outside of the music hall, some busts of the greatest musicians look regally down at you amongst the fluorish of colors from the various mosaic designs. On the side of the Palau stands a famous statue by Miquel Blay entitled La cançó popular catalana (1909). The Catalan song is personified as a graceful maid before a group of male and female figures. Above them is a copy of a silver statuette of St. George in the Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya chapel. The Palau is also a UNESCO world heritage site.
