More Christmas in Barcelona 2011

Going home today I noticed that the holiday decorations that Barcelona usually hangs on every street corner for the Christmas holiday is already strung up on Aragon street and the Passeig de Gracia. This is very exciting news as Christmas in Barcelona is as romantic as Christmas should be. The decorations in the city light up every street with holiday cheer reminding us that this is a time when the weather gets colder and the days get shorter but that we should be grateful about the wonderful things that we still have and the possibilities for the new year.

As I get older, it gets more and more apparent what the important things should be in life. No longer are the days of wishful thinking and what ifs of the future. We are in our lives now. We live each day going to and from work and for anyone that finds themselves in this strange but wonderful city that is Barcelona knows that we live a sort of life here in Barcelona that is not like any other place, at least it is definitely not anything like my hometown back in the States. There is no snow, no Christmas trees or Santa Clauses asking for money on street corners but there is an underlying buzz in the streets. The people walk quicker perhaps, and although the sun still shines (thank you Mediterranean climate) the scarves, jackets and boots come out of storage and start parading.

In this post I would like to address specifically the lights in Barcelona. Here are some photos of last year’s decorations (they don’t usually change much) but really make the city magical at night. Who says that Barcelona is only wonderful in the summer has not spent a winter holiday here.

These are some simple lights on a Rambla street. They are simple but amongst these ancient buildings, you have a strange juxtaposition of old and new.

The most spectacular light show has to be in the Corte Ingles (they have the money for it). These lights changed colors and made different types of designs on the wall of the store. A very efficient way to entice people to come and shop for those last remaining gifts…

I used to think that the London building in this style was prettier than the Torre Agbar…what is apparent is that the Torre Agbar at night is a completely different thing. It’s like a glowing spaceship…

Lastly, I leave you with this decoration that someone found on Paralelo street. With the arrival of Ferran Adrià’s new restaurants and the new shows that are taking place there, it wont be a surprise if the city does something special to decorate that huge street this year.

Stay tuned for more Christmas fun!
