Slide your way down to the Maremagnum!

Category: Barcelona day by day

Barcelona is all about the kids! Have I not mentioned that enough? Just look at the various events and things that are going on in the Maremagnum at the end of the Ramblas area in Barcelona. These days, one of our You Stylish friends, as they were walking down there with their family, came across this giant ramp that was used as a ski slope recently but since it’s Barcelona, well, we have to do things a bit more creatively. Instead of snow, they tossed in water and at the end of the slope, the snowboarders fell into the sea. Check it out below! Just click on the links. How can you not love Barcelona in the Spring?

David in Lycra presides over light ceremony in Barcelona

Category: Barcelona day by day

The Christmas season has officially commenced here in Barcelona and that means a great many things. Sales start, the Christmas street lights go on, stores open on weird times like the night when they were open for the “shopping night” until midnight, or on Sunday when all shops will be open for normal hours. In Barcelona, shops are NEVER open on a Sunday. Its actually against the law. But the Christmas season in Barcelona is like a new city.

Falling in love all alone

Category: Barcelona day by day

I remember the exact moment that I feel in love with Barcelona. I was walking alone in the gardens of Montjuïc. In this time of my life I was a study abroad student in the University of Barcelona and in my free hours, I would wander around the city like a ghost, wafting whichever way tickled my fancy and then hopefully I would clumsily find my way back to my host mother’s apartment. It had rained that day but it didn’t matter. I had my college hoodie over my head and trudged on, determined to master the secrets of the Montjuïc mountain. I liked the feel of the cool water on my face as I walked alone and listened to the droplets shake the trees. I remember that I walked the whole day all over the mountain, and that by the time that I was heading back, the sky was changing and the sun was setting. It was that strange magical hour when the first lights of the city lamps start to flicker dimly and the sky is full of twilight colors. I remember most of all the smell of the city just bathed and batised by the rain, and that in this precise moment, as I was walking down the main stairwell looking onto this city that I had been inhabiting for these past months, the intense loneliness that filled every particle of my being and that made my heart ache so much I thought it could burst, was shushed. I was at peace, and the silence and beauty that was this city, my city, was like a warm blanket against the cold. It filled me up with light starting from the heart and emenating out of me in little electric charges. And like an innocent child, for the first time in my life, I finally felt home.

Reasons to smile in Barcelona

Category: Barcelona day by day

The other day my partner and I were walking with our 2 year old who was fighting a public war against the injustice of having to ride in his stroller when walking and wandering off was so much more inticing. He was undergoing one of his favorite pastimes, crying and tugging at the binding of the stroller, until we came across a small plaza somewhere between Calle Princesa and Sant Pere mes Baix in the Ciutat Vella district. There, in the side of the plaza, stood a young man with a shoe string tied onto a stick that every now and then he dipped in the cut out bottom half of a plastic container filled with soapy water. He then did a sort of circular motion in the air sometimes getting nothing but generally producing amazingly beautiful bubbles. He said nothing, but went on making his bubble art in an almost thoughtful way, pleasure plainly written on the corners of his lips as he saw the children flock around him in awe of the magic. Hector immediately stopped both crying and screaming and was transfixed on the huge bubbles billowing toward him. POP! went the bubble and we walked on. There are always things to encounter in Barcelona. They are small things, perhaps insignificant in the span of a lifetime, but special because any moment in which your child or you can sit in wonder, that moment is worth more than any other sort of treasure.
