Dia de los Reyes (Three Kings Day) - January 6th, the day of Epiphany and traditionally when children receive their Christmas presents
Festes dels Tres Tombs - January 17th, a festival that takes place in the Sant Antoni area of the city which celebrates the day of Saint Anthony the Abbot, the patron saint of animals. El Tres Tombs means three turns in Catalan. Festivals include horse carriages and music
Feast of Santa Eulàlia - a typical Catalan parade of giants (gigantes) to celebrate the second patron saint of Barcelona Santa Eulalia, includes medieval dancing
Carnival - takes place during February at the start of Lent and is traditionally represents the feast before the fasting period running up to Good Friday. The tradition is for party goers to dress up in outrageous costumes to join in with the festivities
The Day of Sant Jordi - April 23rd, this is the day of Sant Jordi (Saint George) who amongst other countries is the Catalan patron saint. This date is also the date in 1616 when Miguel de Cervantes died and also Shakespeare's birthday so 23 April has been chosen as the World Book Day. As a celebration to this it's typical for men and women to exchange flowers and books. All over the city book stalls are set up in order that people can buy books of their choice, on purchasing a book they are given a rose
Virgin of Montserrat - to celebrate the saint of Montserrat (the range of serrated mountains outside Barcelona ), typical activities include choir singing and the traditional Sardana dancing
Corpus Christi - a religious festival to celebrate Jesus Christ with carpets made of flowers, parades and a dancing egg
Dia de Sant Ponc - a fair of herbal products located on the Carrer de l Hospital in the Gotic district
Feast of Sant Joan - June 23rd to 24th - the major celebration takes place on the eve of the 24th June to commemorate the Saint John the Baptist and the onset of summer. Traditionally it is fireworks and bonfires night and the whole city comes alive with extravagant displays, most notably those held along the beach front are very popular
Grec Festival - always at the end of June or start of July. A cultural festival in the Grec theatre on Montjuic (open air) and other venues throughout the city including contemporary and classic music concerts, dance and theatre
Sonar - a long standing electronic music festival to showcase musicians working in this genre
Gay and Lesbian Festival - usually around June 28th, includes a parade that begins at the Placa de l Universitat and then a Saturday night concert
Gaude Home - a fashion show for mens fashion
Festa Major de Gracia - August 15th to 21st, (15 August is Assumption Day) a very popular festival in the Gracia district that draws in big crowds from locals and visitors from other neighbourhoods and tourists. Includes a competition between certain main streets in the area who compete to see who can create the most imaginative street decorations. Also include street concerts, music and general partying
La Diada - This is the Catalan national day which actually celebrates the 1714 siege of Barcelona defeat. It takes place on 11 September and is a day for great patronage with overt displays of the Catalan flag and is an opportunity for nationalist demonstrations and political platforms
La Mercé (Our Lady of Mercy)- week of celebrations around the 24th September to celebrate the patron Saint of the city. A whole week of organised events including music concerts by renowned musicians, fireworks, food and wine, street art and theatre. The final night is a huge piromusical display at Placa Espanya
BAM - a celebration of music including well known musicians who perform free concerts all over the city to coincide with La Merce celebrations
Textile Exhibition - mid October
Festival de Tardor - October to November, short duration festival of arts including theatre, dance, music and art
Festival Internacional de Jazz de Barcelona - an well established and respected jazz festival throughout major venues in the city, featuring top class musicians from around the world
Christmas Fairs - traditional markets selling all kinds of typical festive items and freshly harvested Christmas trees and their decorations outside the main cathedral and Sagradia Familia
Swimming cup on Christmas Day, an annual event for those swimmers brave enough to dip into the freezing Mediterranean sea for the challenge
New Years Eve - parties throughout the city not forgetting the tradition for locals to eat one grape with every chime of the bells striking up to the New Year
